The Hungry Hikers

I’m wondering if this is a food blog or a “this is where we went today” blog.

This afternoon we decided to head over to Kennesaw Mountain to hike and birdwatch. We were up on the mountain for about 3 hours and we all had a blast. Of course, because of our extreme level of exercise we stopped and picked up a couple burgers on the way home.

Sorry, no pics. I couldn’t eat the burger, drive the truck, AND focus the camera at the same time.

I am not sure if I will post tomorrow either, because we are thinking of heading back out to one of our local state parks to hike the trails and enjoy this fabulous spring weather. If we stop anywhere, I will try and take a photo, even if it’s some mom and pop place along the way.

In With The Old…

Sorry folks, it was a boring night around here tonight. Fried shrimp, fried rice, leftovers. Nothing exciting about dinner.

Of course, we had this simple non-exciting dinner because I had a late afternoon job interview that seemed to go very well. Hopefully I’ll be blogging about a celebratory dinner sometime next week.

Hot Wings

We spent the day in Douglasville today, and I got a hankering for hot wings.

It’s funny how you crave food the moment you see a sign or get the idea in your head.

They don’t have a website, but they had an awesome (and simple) menu.

I got some “medium” wings, and I have to say, they were probably the best wings I have had in over 10 years.

Hot Turkey Sandwiches

No photos or video tonight. Sorry.

After Christmas dinner we froze most of the turkey breast and some gravy, so for dinner we thawed it out, sliced the turkey, heated it in the gravy and made hot turkey sandwiches.

Delicious.

Another Homemade Meal

No photos again tonight. I spent the day following up with recruiters and re-organizing my farm on Facebook. Yeah I know, ambitious to no end.

I only got responses from three of the recruiters which means 3 or 4 of them will call me before noon tomorrow. They better anyway.

We had tacos, bean burritos, and guacamole for dinner tonight. The refried beans were homemade, as was the fresh guacamole. Now I am stuffed and happy and ready to vegetate the rest of the night.

More tomorrow, really.

Happy National Artichoke Hearts Day!

I have loved artichokes my entire life, how did I miss the fact that March 16th is National Artichoke Hearts Day?

In celebration of this wondrous occasion, we will be serving Barbecued Chicken (in honor of our International EATAPETA Day festivities) along with those delicious artichokes pictured above, with a side of rice and a nice glass of southern iced sweet tea.

Don’t worry orzo fans, I will post the photos tomorrow.

Eat An Animal For PETA Day

Many years ago, in response to PETA’s offensive advertising, Meryl Yourish called for a national day of feasting on behalf of all meat eaters around the world.

Here in our house, we have celebrated each year, not only on International EATAPETA Day, but for the entire week.

International Eat A Tasty Animal for PETA day is one of my family’s favorite holidays (well, it should be).

This year, we are celebrating from Friday through Wednesday, and so far we have had a great time.

On Friday we devoured some all-beef hot dogs, baked beans (with pork), and french fries (cooked in animal fat).

On Saturday we decided to mix it up a bit and had tasty pork chops with orzo (made with 100% chicken stock).

And today, the official EATAPETA Day, we ate Sea Kittens (fish), shrimp, and french fries (cooked in animal fat).

Tomorrow we plan to have hamburgers, and on Tuesday we may have fish again, because it’s so tasty. We plan to wrap things up on Wednesday with a trip to KFC, because no EATAPETA week would be complete if we didn’t show our support to the folks who get on PETA’s nerves the most.

I will post some photos of our orzo session tomorrow.

Fresh Produce, Coming Soon

We had the greatest surprise today.

My brother-in-law showed up with his tiller and helped us till out 10×20ft garden. Then he stuck around a few more hours and tilled another 20×40ft garden for us too. We are going to have ONE HECK of a garden this year.

As trade for his hard work, I sent him home with some blueberry jam, muscadine jelly, apple butter, crabapple jelly, and one jar of my prized (and worth more than gold) wild blackberry jam.

Photoless Egg Muffins

Yeah, I know, I promised you a few photos today. Guess what, stuff happens.

Tonight we had the homemade equivalent of McDonald’s Egg McMuffins, although ours were not cooked in perfect circles and they didn’t have tough canadian bacon on them and the muffins were not stale.

I fried the eggs in butter, I toasted the fresh English muffins, and heated the Canadian Bacon. A nice fresh slice of cheese on top and everyone devoured their dinner tonight.

Photoless Tacos

I was extremely busy today keeping an eye on the server, so when it came time for dinner, we made Tacos.

Everyone loves tacos. No photos though, they were camera shy tacos. More photographic savory goodness sometime tomorrow. Yeah, that’s it.
